Environmental Work Group Meeting Notes
January 28, 2007

In Attendance: Loren Graham, Annie Avery, Karl Seeley, Kathy Shimberg, Colleen Blacklock, Mark Davies, Joe Richardson, Ed Lentz, John Miglietta

The group's focus on Peak Oil/Climate Change ("PO/CC") was confirmed.  It was also agreed that we should emphasize re-localization.

Possible activities that were discussed include:

  1. "Road Shows" on PO/CC to area high schools
  2. "Road Shows" on PO/CC to area town boards
  3. Request the County Board to set up a PO/CC Citizen Commission
  4. Conduct public fora on PO/CC
  5. Establish a local growers & producers co-op for receiving, warehousing, and distributing locally grown or produced goods for sale in other markets, e.g., NYC
  6. Establish a "commercial kitchen" for use by local growers & producers
  7. Establish a local barter currency network
  8. Facilitate conduct of home energy audits and installation of environment-friendly solutions  (Otsego Rural Housing may perform energy audits as a community service)
  9. Lobby legislators to regulate greenhouse gas emissions (e.g., raise Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards)
  10. Encourage the City of Oneonta to actively participate in the CCP Campaign (http://www.iclei.org/index.php?id=1118) and/or the Mayor's Climate Protection Agreement (http://www.mayors.org/climateprotection/)
  11. Establish a community garden for the City of Oneonta
  12. Encourage home gardening and gardens in schools
  13. Promote installation of bicycle trails
  14. Arrange for public showings of relevant films, e.g., during the UCCA film series or independently, e.g., at the Foothills Production Center, Hartwick, SUCO, or other venue. [N.B. Foothills can be rented for $40/hr (non-profits) / $80/hr (for profits)]

Agreed actions:

  1. John to identify relevant films and to explore venues
  2. Kathy to contact UCCCA about showing films
  3. Ed to investigate the Cities Climate Protection Agreement and whether or not Oneonta is engaged
  4. Ed to invite Dave Hutchison to join our group;  Karl to invite Patrick Dohan; all to invite other interested persons
  5. Colleen to contact Alice Siegfried about joining our group and about allowing us to use her knowledge to create an Oneonta gardener's almanac
  6. Karl to identify a student to draft such almanac
  7. Colleen talk to Tim Johnson about using the Autumn Café for films/discussions
  8. Karl to contact Andrew Seligsohn about showing films at Hartwick
  9. Ed to contact SUCO Poli Sci dept about showing films at SUCO

It was also agreed that we can make progress between meetings by exchanging emails.

Note: Outside of the meeting, Karen Anderson reported that a day of demonstrations re climate change is being organized for April 14.  See, www.stepitup2007.org.  Karen is willing to assist in organizing such event for the Oneonta area. 

Also outside of the meeting, Janet Sutta suggested that we work on the City of Oneonta's comprehensive plan.
