Meeting Agenda and previous minutes Coalition for Democracy Healthcare Work Group Thursday, February 7, 2008 at 5:30 pm at the First United Methodist Church From Laura McClure: Hi everyone! Below are: - The proposed agenda for our meeting on Thursday (February 7 at 5:30 pm at the First United Methodist Church) - Some initial ideas for the name of our newspaper to spark discussion at the meeting - Minutes of our last meeting Hope to see you Thursday! I'll bring the cookies. Laura 1. PROPOSED AGENDA Report on state-wide conference call and state-wide organizing Review of Sicko/Oprah House party Coalition for Democracy Follow up on Gillibrand letter/letter to Arcuri Next Meeting is Thursday, March 6 at 5:30 p.m. Our own tabloid newspaper/magazine 2. NEWSPAPER NAME BRAINSTORM Please come to the meeting with ideas for a name for our newspaper. To help kick off our discussion, Michael & I came up with the list below, which ranges from serious to slightly wacky. Most of them go better with a tagline, so we've included one. Health Crisis DOC What's Up, DOC? Heartbeat of Central New York Cure Cure-All Get Well Soon All In SOS Life Support Upstate Health Recovery of Central New York Covered Central New York Messenger Health of Central New York Get Well Soon Simple & Free 3. MINUTES OF LAST MEETING My notes were unusually sketchy last time, so please let me know if you have corrections or additions. Notes from Healthcare Work Group Meeting Next meetings: We finalized details of the viewing and discussion of Oprah tape for the following evening (January 18) Mary will participate for us in a January 23 conference call of single-payer activists around the state. Laura presented an updated chart comparing the presidential candidates' positions on healthcare. She has sent it to Walter Vom Saal to post on the CfD website. Michael outlined the budget for our proposed healthcare reform newspaper. We plan to publish at least two issues in 2008, and print 3000 copies of each. Newspaper will be an 8-12 page tabloid. Ideas for content: - Personal stories (eg, Sandy's) about local people's experiences with the healthcare system Make sure to send newspaper to our elected officials (Arcuri, Gillibrand, Schumer, etc) Mary will find out about applying for a small grant from the Methodist Church to support the newspaper. We discussed Rep. Gillibrand's reply to our letters in support of HR 676. Michael is drafting a response. (Kathy?) reported on a conversation with Chris Wilcox, Rep. Michael Arcuri's aide, who said that Arcuri was sympathetic to HR 676 and was friends with Kucinich. We need to send a letter to Arcuri.
