Event Announcement

Healthcare Workshop

The Coalition for Democracy Healthcare Committee is sponsoring an all-day workshop on healthcare on SATURDAY OCTOBER 21, 2006 from 9 am to 5 pm at the Rowe House at 31 Maple Street in Oneonta.

This is a follow-up to our Speakout on Sept. 27. (Thanks to all for helping get the word out for that. It was a really nice event, and got a great write-up in the Daily Star - although they underestimated the turnout.)

At the Oct. 21 workshop, we'll talk in small groups about healthcare in this country, Canada and the UK - using our own brand-new workbook on the subject. Then we'll try to come up with a plan to organize locally for systemic reform.

We hope you can come, and please also tell your friends & colleagues about it!

A press release about the workshop is below.

Healthcare Workshop Aims to Spur Local Activism

The U.S. spends 60% more on healthcare than the United Kingdom. Yet every British citizen has full access to free healthcare, while 16% of Americans don't even have health insurance. What's more, the British live longer than Americans and have a much lower rate of infant mortality. Canadians also get more healthcare coverage than Americans, pay less for it--and have better health statistics to boot. Meanwhile, in the U.S., the publicly funded Veterans Health Administration outperforms the nation's most elite private healthcare providers--including the Mayo Clinic.*

What's going on here?

Area residents will gather in Oneonta on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2006 for an all-day HEALTHCARE WORKSHOP to explore this and other questions. After small-group discussions based on a fact book developed by local activists, they'll work together to develop a local plan of action for reforming the U.S. healthcare system. The workshop is sponsored by the Healthcare Committee of the Coalition for Democracy of Central New York.

Last month, the group held a Healthcare Speakout in which local residents aired their gripes with healthcare in our area, generating a long list of complaints about everything from Medicaid paperwork to the lack of dental care.

"Obviously, something needs to be done about the crisis we're facing with ealthcare," said Paddy Lane, one of the event's organizers. "We want to figure out just what that something is--and then start working for it."

The workshop will take place on October 21 from 9 am to 5 pm (with a break for lunch) at the Rowe House, 31 Maple Street in Oneonta. For more information, please email Laura McClure at lauramcclure@earthlink.net or call Mary Breuninger at 607-432-2234.
