SEPTEMBER 11 CALL TO RESTORE THE SOUL OF AMERICA:
MILITARY FAMILIES TO SPEAK AT "FREEDOM FROM FEAR" EVENT
A new group based in Oneonta to be called Restore the Soul of America (RSA)
will be joining other communities around the United States on September 11
to call for Freedom from Fear. The event will be held at the First United
Methodist Church, 66 Church Street, at 7 PM, and will feature speakers from
Military Families Speak Out and Gold Star Families Speak Out. This will launch
RSA's campaign to challenge Congress to represent more truly the hopes and
aspirations of the American people, and to call for a restoration of true
democracy.
RSA members say that ongoing war in Iraq and looming catastrophe in Iran
and the Middle East, the use of torture, violations of the Constitution and
civil rights, and the ever-increasing influence of money in government are
cause for deep concern about the loss of America's soul. The group is not
sure the US now has a functioning democracy. Their three most immediate goals
are:
- support an immediate withdrawal of troops and bases from Iraq;
- oppose an attack on Iran--promoted by those who led us into Iraq--which could
provoke nuclear confrontation;
- seek pledges to work for open, honest and ethical government, starting with
removing big money from election campaigns.
RSA acknowledges that the decline in our democracy is complex and deep-seated
and will require a long-term commitment to change. The core of the group
comes from faith communities, colleges in Otsego and Delaware Counties and
from networks of issues-related groups.
Speakers for the "Freedom from Fear" event will be Derek Davey
and Michele Feak, both from upstate New York.
Derek Davey, a former Marine, is a member of Gold Star Families Speak Out
(GSFSO), a chapter of Military Families Speak Out. It is an organization
for relatives of members of the military who have been killed or lost their
lives from the fall of 2002 to the present. GSFSO believes the best way to
support the troops is to bring them home now and take care of them when they
get here. Derek's son, Corporal Seamus M. Davey, was killed in Haqlaniyah,
Iraq in October of 2005.
Michele Feak, a member of Military Families Speak Out, is the mother of
a soldier recently back from Iraq. She will speak on "How the Iraq war
changed our lives--a mom's brief from the front lines."
