Event Announcement

---------------------------------

When people lack health care,
it is not just a problem for them,
but for all of us.

You are cordially invited to attend a public forum on an exciting proposal to establish a community-based Free Health Clinic to serve Otsego and Delaware Counties.

“Creating a Clinic for a Healthy Community”
Wednesday, September 6th
7:00 p.m.
Unitarian Universalist Society of Oneonta
12 Ford Avenue in Oneonta

Marjorie Hamrell of Volunteers in Medicine Institute will speak on her nationwide experience in helping people create free clinics in their communities. Located in Burlington, Vermont, Volunteers in Medicine Institute (www.vimi.org) is a not-for-profit organization that promotes and guides the development of a national network of free clinics to serve the uninsured within a culture of caring so that everyone in a community has access to health care.

Dr. Benjamin Friedell will facilitate a discussion, addressing issues including:

• The local need for a free clinic
• The medical community’s support
• Legal aspects
• What is needed to start a free clinic here

No community truly can be healthy if a significant portion of the population is excluded from basic medical services. In the absence of a national universal health care policy, concerned citizens need to find other ways to provide the medically under-served with the health care services they lack.

We have an extraordinary opportunity. Creating a free health clinic is possible, but the interest and involvement of many constituencies throughout our two counties is essential to the success of this project. If ensuring the health of our friends and neighbors is a concern to you, please join us to see how together we can make it happen.
