The Convergence Of Hope and History

The capacity for hope is one of the most sustaining and helpful qualities of
the human spirit. Even when the world looks bleakest, history is replete
with ordinary men and women who still find cause for hope. Courageously
stepping forward, humanity continues its journey toward wisdom and
understanding, toward compassion and love, bringing into being this meeting
of Hope and History.

This year's conference is dedicated to sustainable solutions for restoring
our land and renewing our spirit. We will discuss sustainable solutions for
our energy needs and how to live simply.

We will consider what constitutes a workable government and a responsible
citizenry, and how our spiritual values and individual initiative can carry
us forward to a time of peace, sustainable prosperity and compassion.
Please join us on August 18 & 19, 2006 for the 8th annual Peace Conference
at the National Kateri Tekakwitha Shrine.

Our Keynote Speakers

Jim Merkel

Jim Merkel is the author of Radical Simplicity and is the Sustainability
Coordinator at Dartmouth College. Originally a military engineer and arms
trader, Jim changed his life at the time of the Exxon Valdez disaster,
quitting his job and devoting himself to environmental service and world
peace. He downsized his life and lived on $5,000 a year for 16 years. Jim
founded the Global Living Project (GLP) and initiated the GLP Summer
Institute, where teams of researchers attempted to live on an equitable
portion of the biosphere.

Living a simple, sustainable life in the midst of a high-achiever,
high-consumption culture presents monumental challenges and opportunities.
Jim Merkel will explore practical ways to make sustainable reductions in our
spending and ecological impact on the earth. Examples and practical
suggestions will spark your creativity, gently moving us toward a harmonious
and sustainable world.

Jim Jennings

Dr. James Jennings is Founder and President of Conscience International, a
humanitarian aid and human rights organization. He has led humanitarian
relief teams to many countries. His goal is to promote a dialogue of cultures, rather than a clash of
civilizations, through friendship and solidarity. He is a frequent political
commentator and spokesperson for human rights on CNN, FOX, and other TV and
radio networks.

This past April 2006, Dr. Jennings led a Conscience International team to
the Darfur region of Sudan to administer relief and to engage in discussions
with Sudan's leaders, with the goal of strengthening the peace process. In
2005 he held similar meetings with the leaders of Iran and Syria and
convened academic conferences at the universities of Damascus and Tehran.
